Getting to Fraser Island
Getting to Fraser Island from Brisbane is a good 3 1/2 hour drive north passing many scenic small towns. Located close by are these two cities in Queensland, first you will pass through Maryborough known for its older features and it's also the birth place of the P.L Travers the author of the book Marry Poppins.
Travel north just 35km and you will come to the next city Hervey Bay well known for it's safe beaches, also called The Gateway to Fraser Island.
Hervey Bay is also very well known as the Whale Watching Capital of the World, Whales visit the calm waters here once a year and can also be seen from the Island shore as they pass by.
Flights to Hervey Bay take around 45 minutes using Qantas.
Once you have arrived in Hervey Bay flights leave daily to Fraser Island via Air Fraser, some flights are also available from Maroochydore.
Getting on the Island
Four wheel drive barges leave daily, from River heads and Inskip Point please note that ( Inskip Point) is not located in Hervey Bay.
High-clearance four wheel drive are needed to access Fraser Island.
- Inskip Point : Just 15 minutes from Rainbow Beach. Trip time is about 10 minutes.
- River Heads : Just 15 minutes from Hervey Bay. Trip time takes around 30 to 50 minutes.
You may also walk on as a passenger.
You will also find many commercial tours that leave from Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay.

When you find yourself gazing at the beautiful beaches on the Island, there are many forms transport to see the scenic landscape.
Most people use a four wheel drive to get around, others prefer bush walking to see the best parts of the Island, canoeing and boats are great way to view the streams and lakes that a 4WD vehicle cant access.
You could also hire a plane for a full view of the wonderful scenery, and see all of the Island that you can't from the ground.
